An 18-month old boy was shot in the lower right leg during an incident at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Pine Tree Village in Shenango Township. Sergio Jose Flores-Cabrera, 18, of the 2400 block of Colt Road, Greenville, was taken into custody after police responded to investigate a shooting. According to Chief Riley Smoot of the Southwest Mercer County Police Department: Flores- Cabrera had a loaded .22-caliber revolver in a backpack-type bag and put the bag on the floor in the apartment. He left it unattended. The boy picked up the bag, and the firearm discharged. Flores-Cabrera is being held on charges of reckless endangering, illegal possession of a firearm and tampering with evidence. The boy first was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown and transferred to Akron Children’s Hospital. No information was available on his condition.

A digital security system, funded with a $4,348 grant from the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, was recently installed at Children’s Rehabilitation Center, 885 Howland-Wilson Road N.E. The system more effectively ensures the safety of the center’s children, their caregivers, employees and community members while in the building and on the grounds, center officials said.

The Girard school district will conduct two public meetings about the Safe Routes to School proposal. Sessions will be at 6 p.m. today and 6 p.m. May 26, both in the high school cafeteria. The program provides funding for applicants for infrastructure improvements that make school sites more accessible for walkers and bicyclists.
