Marvel E. Flint scholarships to be awarded at dinner
CANFIELD
The third annual Marvel E. Flint Scholar Awards Dinner will be at 4 p.m. May 23 at Avion on the Water Banquet Center, 2177 Western Reserve Road. Dr. Alison J. Harmon, associate dean at Beeghly College of Education at Youngstown State University, will be the keynote speaker.
At the dinner the organization will present scholarships to four area high school seniors for the pursuit of higher education. Recipients will be Mercedes Newby of Sharon, Kevin Ngo of Boardman, Rachel Warren of Ursuline and David Wilkes of Brookfield.
The event also will honor the accomplishments of the following seniors attending Youngstown Early College: Matthew Benton, Kenneth Holt, Javonne LaFontaine, Tawni McClendon and Heather Powell. The five have earned the necessary college credits to be eligible for associate degrees to be awarded during May commencement ceremonies at Youngstown State University.
The Flint Scholarship Fund was established to honor the late Marvel E. Flint who was born in Youngstown and lived in Hermitage, Pa., with her husband, Paul G. Flint. The purpose of the fund is to support her work of providing educational support and cultural enrichment for marginalized youths.
