Donko’s triple lifts Ursuline; Fitch splits

Anna Donko’s two-out, two-run triple in the fifth inning helped the Ursuline High softball team defeat Toledo Notre Dame Academy, 3-2, on Saturday.
With Ursuline (17-4) trailing 2-0, Brianna Curd walked and Malikka Caige singled. Donko brought them home with her three-base hit then scored on Sarah Ingalls’ RBI single.
For Toledo NDA, Stephanie Treece tripled.

NORTH JACKSON
Winning pitcher Lindsey Knipp (13-7) tossed a no-hitter, striking out 12 batters and walking one. Knipp also doubled.
Katie Santor’s two doubles drove in two runs for the Bluejays (15-8). Caitlin Carney hit a three-run triple and Paije Kiraly hit a solo homer.
BASEBALL
Fitch 17-8, Lakeview 0-9
CORTLAND
Anthony Paris’ four hits included a triple and double as the Falcons won the first game, 17-0. Paris drove in three runs and scored three times.
Anthony Savko hit two doubles and Chris Miller one. Tony Koch tossed the five-hit shutout. It was the first varsity win for Koch, a senior, who is usually Fitch’s centerfielder. For the Bulldogs, Darren Hamilton had two hits.
In the second game, the Bulldogs (8-16) overcame a sixth-inning, six-run deficit. Anthony Franco’s bloop single in the seventh inning scored Hamilton with the winning run and capped a six-run inning.
Franco and Josh Pryor doubled. Pryor, Shane O’Connor and Justin Misterka each had two hits.
For the Falcons (7-16), Anthony Savko, Miller and Koch each had three hits while Jacobb Eynon doubled.
Columbiana 9, South Range 6
NORTH LIMA
Josh Saverko pitched five strong innings, striking out six, and Jeff Davidson picked up his first save.
Saverko also had two hits and two RBIs.
South Range’s loss sealed Springfield’s claim to the Inter Tri-County League Tier One championship with a 12-2 record.
Kyle Shaffer had a triple, double and two RBIs, while Andrew Burdick had two hits and scored three times for Columbiana (15-10, 10-4).
Gerrad Rohan had two hits and two RBIs, Mike Thorpe tripled and Jack McDonald doubled for South Range (18-5, 11-3), whose pitcher, Vince Miller (4-1), went the seven-inning distance, striking out 10.
West Branch 32-16, Southeast 7-3
RAVENNA
Mikey Manser had two home runs and two singles for six RBIs for the Warriors. Brenden Wells had a home run and two singles and five RBIs while Bo Beegle had a home run and single for six RBIs in the 32-7 win.
More West Branch offense was provided by Matt Unkefer’s three singles, Jake Stahl’s two doubles and Mike Smith’s two singles.
Kyle White had a double and single for Southeast (3-19, 2-2).
In the 16-3 win, Unkefer had two doubles and a single for two RBIs, Stahl had a home run and three RBIs and Manser had a double and single and two RBIs for the Warriors.
Wells and Taylor Pidgeon had two singles apiece.
For Southeast, Joey DeJacimo had two singles and an RBI, Kyle White homered and Anthony Pennington doubled.
TRACK AND FIELD
Columbiana
Columbiana senior Nick Melone and South Range’s Abbey Ausnehmer won the high point awards at the Clipper Invite at the Ward Athletic Complex, while the Raiders’ boys and girls won team titles.
Melone won the 100-meter dash, the 400 and was part of the winning 4x200 relay to finish with 221/2 points.
Canfield senior Dustin Brode set meet and stadium records in the shot put (62 feet, 63/4 inches) and discus (174).
Others setting meet records were South Range 3200 runner Ryan Roush (10:25.7), the Raiders’ 4x400 relay (3:33.0, which was also a stadium record) and East Palestine high jumper Mike Salyers (6-2).
Ausnehmer won the 100 and was part of the winning 4x400 relay and also placed second in the 300 hurdles and third in the 200.
