Cleveland State baseball wins sweep of Penguins
Avon
Cleveland State had three big innings — one in game one and two in game two — to sweep a doubleheader from Youngstown State, 16-11 and 12-6, on Saturday at All Pro Freight Stadium.
Those three big innings accounted for 21 of Cleveland State’s 28 runs over the two games.
In game one, the Vikings scored 11 runs in the third inning and withstood a rally by YSU to hold on for its 16-11 win.
Joe Iacobucci doubled twice and drove in four runs for Youngstown State. Kyle Shaffer and Bob Suitca both drove in four runs for Cleveland State, which outhit YSU just 17-16.
Jacke Healey broke the school record for runs in a season when he scored in the fourth.
That was his 55th run of the season, which broke Mark Thomas’ record of 54 set in 1999.
In game two, the Penguins scored three times despite recording just one hit in the first inning. Healey drew a one-out walk, and Tom Clayton reached on a fielder’s choice. Both runners advanced on a passed ball, and Iacobucci drove in the pair with a single up the middle.
Iacobucci stole second, advanced on an error and scored on Marzec’s sacrifice fly.
Cleveland State, though, struck for six runs on six hits and two walks in the bottom of the first to go up 6-3.
