Health-care workshop
YOUNGSTOWN
“Empowering You,” a health-care workshop for female military veterans, is Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission, 345 Oakhill Ave.
Between 20 and 25 vendors displaying health-care information and lectures and group activities are planned. A lunch, dessert and gifts will be provided to the veterans. Pre-registration for the free event, sponsored by the Department of Veterans Affairs, is required by Monday. Call Connie Schaffer at (330) 740-9200 ext. 1562. Vocational training
The Retired Enlisted Association (TREA), through its Armed Forces Aid Campaign, is offering a new program, Vocational Educational Training (VET), which provides disabled Afghanistan and Iraq veterans separating from the military an opportunity to receive educational training suitable for their experience and background. The program covers some costs not provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense government educational assistance programs.
VET assistance will be awarded on a case-by-case basis with allowances made for the severity of the disability, the type of vocational training being sought, and the personal financial situation of the applicant.

Benefits seminar
NEW CASTLE, PA.
The Lawrence County Veterans Affairs Office is offering a veterans benefits seminar from 10 a.m. to noon Monday at the Lawrence County Government Center, Commissioners Meeting Room, 430 Court St. The speaker is Lauren Heiger, customer-service manager and coordinator of “My Healthe Vet,” the VA’s e-health Web site. The site provides veterans and active duty military personnel, and their dependents and caregivers, Internet access to VA health care information and services.
