18-month-old injured after unattended firearm discharges, police say

An 18-month old boy was shot in the lower right leg Saturday afternoon at Pine Tree Village in Shenango Township.
Chief Riley Smoot of Southwest Mercer County Police Department, said Sergio Jose Flores-Cabrera, 18, of the 2400 block of Colt Road, Greenville, was taken into custody after police responded to investigate a shooting.
Flores-Cabrera had a loaded .22-caliber revolver in a backpack-type bag, and he left the bag on the floor of the apartment unattended, police said.
The boy picked up the bag, and the firearm discharged, Smoot said.
Flores-Cabrera is being held on charges of reckless endangering, illegal possession of a firearm and tampering with evidence.
The boy was first taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, and then transferred to Akron Children’s Hospital.
No information was available on the child’s condition.
