Megown exhibit opens

“Making Memories — Prints from Youngstown Photographer John Douglas Megown,” an exhibition of prints curated and produced by Youngstown State University photography students, opens today at the Mahoning Valley Historical Society’s Arms Family Museum, 648 Wick Ave., and runs through June 27.

The 28 prints were made from glass-plate negatives made by Youngstown photographer John Megown between 1908 and 1920, and selected from the more than 300 plates students printed as part of a course in vintage negatives.

“The class is an opportunity for students to learn how to work with primary source material and put a direct face on the history of photography in Youngstown,” said Richard Mitchell, professor emeritus.

The John Douglas Megown Collection is owned by the MVHS. Megown was a local photographer who left behind a body of work that offers a window into Youngstown in the first two decades of the 20th century.

Since the 1980s, YSU photography students have worked with MVHS resources. Museum hours are 1-5 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday. For more information, go to mahoninghistory.org.
