HELOISE: Locate bird cage in a spot that’s safe

Dear Readers: Birds can make wonderful pets! They are intelligent and melodic (some would say noisy!), and can be nice companions. But where do most people place the bird cage?

The kitchen might be the first place you’d think of. But think again. Birds have extremely sensitive respiratory systems. Smoke and grease residue from cooking can hinder the bird’s ability to breathe. Also, the kitchen is a place where there can be a lot of people going in, out and through, which can be stressful for some birds, and the temperature in there can change quickly while you are cooking.

Cookware also poses risks for our feathered friends. Nonstick — and, in fact, all — cookware can harm birds if the pans are overheated, because they can release fumes that can be toxic to your fowl friend.

Other household items can be dangerous for the bird as well, such as hair spray, perfume and room fresheners.

So, where should that bird cage go? Lots of people today spend hours at home in their office or den. Why not have a feathered friend in there with you?

Bird ownership can be a rewarding and long-lasting relationship, as long as the bird is happy, healthy and safe.
