Prize scam
WARREN
A 66-year-old Atlantic Street woman reported that she was scammed out of $28,187 from individuals calling her on the telephone telling her she had won $2.5 million from a well-known prize company. She told police she got the first call April 24, telling her she had won. The caller said his boss would call her back, which he did later that night.
The second man told her she had to send money and meet with an agent at her home. The woman sent the money on a Visa card. Representatives called her after that “every day asking for more money,” she said.
A Warren police officer went to her home around noon Thursday, and she was talking to one of the callers then. The officer told her to get an address, but when she asked for one, the caller hung up, a police report says. The victim said the phone numbers she was given are in Jamaica.
