Discover labyrinth

Learn about the labyrinth May 16 at the Ursuline Center, 4280 Shields Road.

Starting at 2 p.m. and every quarter hour until 3:30, there will be a presentation in the auditorium on the how, what, why, when and where of labyrinths.

After each presentation, participants may explore the labyrinth on their own or with a facilitator.

The labyrinth is designed to be used by individuals of all ages, families and groups.

The labyrinth at the Ursuline Center is handicapped accessible and has adequate parking.

It is open daily dawn-to-dusk.

Blessing of animals

St. James’ Episcopal Church, 7640 Glenwood Ave., will conduct its annual blessing of animals at 4 p.m. Sunday on the front lawn.

Rogation Sunday, the sixth Sunday after Easter, is a traditional time to give thanks for God’s creation.

In a time more focused on rural life, Rogation Sunday was a day to bless the fields as the year’s crops were being planted and to bless the farm animals on whom the community’s life depended.

The church retains aspects of this old custom by blessing the animals whose presence enriches our lives.

All animals are welcome, but mucst be leashed or in carriers. Photos of animals also will be blessed.

Photos will be taken of animals with their owners.

Treats for people and animals will be served after the blessing.

Gospel concert

Chestnut Ridge Church Of God, 7215 Chestnut Ridge Road, with Pastor Rob McFarland, will present Sue Dodge, a four-time Dove Award winner for best female vocalist in a concert at 6 p.m. May 16. She is in the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.

Doors open at 5 p.m. Seating is limited to 340.

Phillips Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, 718 Albert St., will celebrate its 92nd anniversary with the theme, “Reaching Up in Faith – Reaching Out to the Lord.”

There will be a series of services, all at 7 p.m., with guest churches.

The schedule is Monday, St. Andrewes African Methodist Episcopal Church; Tuesday, Holy Trinity Baptist Church; Wednesday, Triedstone Baptist Church; Thursday, Elizabeth Baptist Church; and Friday, Mount Zion Church.

The celebration will conclude at 4 p.m. May 16 with the Rev. Kenneth Simon and New Bethel Baptist Church as guests.

The Rev. Amariah McIntosh is host pastor and Corine Taylor, chairwoman.

Youth ministers

Youth ministers are invited to explore the grounds of Villa Maria Community Center as Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center hosts its first open house for youth ministers at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Youth retreat information will be available.

Musical celebration

The fifth annual “Come, Christians, Join to Sing — A Musical Celebration” is scheduled at 7 p.m. May 16 at First Presbyterian Church, 125 N. Jefferson St.

Traditional, gospel and contemporary Christian music will be featured.

Donations will benefit the New Castle City Rescue Mission.

Refreshments will follow in the church hall.

Women’s celebration

Tabernacle Baptist Church, 707 Arlington St., will observe a women’s day celebration at the 10:45 a.m. worship service, which will be led by women.

Dr. Flora Dees of New Hope Baptist Church, Akron, will be guest speaker.

The education assistance ministry will present “The Glory Train Revisited,” a play directed by Lois Thornton, at 6:30 p.m. May 16.

Doors open at 6.

Donation is $15.

Labyrinth walks

Villa Maria, Pa.

Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center will conduct guided labyrinth walks beginning with an outdoor walk from 2 to 4 p.m. May 16.

The labyrinth is a tool for enriching the spiritual journey.

Sister Therese Pavilonis will offer a brief history and introduction.

No registration is required but is appreciated.

A free-will offering will be accepted.

The stewardship commission of St. Patrick Church, 225 N. Main St., will sponsor a ministry fair weekend after Masses at 4 p.m. Saturday and 7:30, 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. Masses on May 16.

The event is geared to welcome new members and energize present members.

There will be pizza Saturday and continental breakfast May 16.

First Church Christ Scientist, 1515 S. Meridian Road, will host an open house at 3 p.m. May 16 followed by a free concert at 4 by Christian musician Alex Cook of Jamaica Plain, Mass.

His forthcoming album is “Tree of Life.” His music features a large variety of styles appropriate for all age groups. He is the creator and director of the Jamaica Plain Mural Program ,where teen artists create murals in Boston. His work has been featured in the Boston Herald, Media Arts Magazine and the Christian Science Monitor.

A musical program will be at 6:30 p.m. today with elder Robert Mitchell, director.

A service is planned at 9 a.m. Sunday with Pastor Sabrina Ellis of Pentecostal Church of Christ in Cleveland as speaker.

A banquet is planned at 6:30 p.m. Friday at The Geogetown, 5945 South Ave., Boardman.

Speaker will be Dr. J. Louis Felton, pastor of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church in Kalamazoo, Mich.

A UBC praise concert, directed by Elder Darren Thomas from Calvary International, is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday at the church.

On May 16, Pastor Avan Odom of New Fellowship Baptist Church, Warren, will deliver the message at the 10:45 a.m. worship service. Bishop Timothy Clarke of First Church of God, Columbus, will be the guest preacher at the 5 p.m. service.

Pastor Harrison is the former chairman of the African American Leadership Commission, past officer of ACTION (Alliance for Congregational Transformation Influencing our Neighborhoods), a past moderator and current vice moderator of the Eastern Ohio, Western Pennsylvania and Northern West Virginia Baptist Association and past president of the Baptist’s Pastor’s Council of Youngstown and vicinity. He is president of the Ohio Baptist State Convention. He is on the board of the Wean Foundation.

Crossing Paths local TV ministry, founded by Donald G. Reed Sr. and seen on more than 70 cable companies, will have its annual spring banquet at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Brentford House, 737 Myron St.

Guest speaker will be Lejla Allison of the village of Dubrave, Bosnia. She will speak on the ethnic conflict in war-torn country in the 1990s and how she appreciated a gift from Operation Christmas Child, a ministry of Samaritan’s Purse.
