Valley Relays For Life near fund-raising marks

YOUNGSTOWN

Several American Cancer Society Relay For Life events in the Northeast Ohio Region may reach income milestones and set records this fund-raising season.

There are six relays in the region that may exceed or reach a milestone, including two in Trumbull County. According to ACS records, there also are seven counties in the region that could exceed or reach a milestone, including Mahoning and Trumbull.

In Trumbull, the Warren Relay β€” the largest in Ohio β€” could surpass the $6 million mark of total income raised since its inception in 1993 if it raises about $340,000.

The Warren event starts at 6 p.m. today and ends at 6 p.m. Saturday in the downtown Courthouse Square.

In addition, the Cortland Relay needs to raise about $40,000 to put it over the $1 million total income mark.

Trumbull County also could set another record if the five relays that are planned this year raise about $1 million. If so, the county would surpass the $10 million mark for total income raised since their inceptions.

Mahoning County could reach the $6 million mark if the five relays this year raise about $485,000, officials said.

β€œThe Northeast Ohio Region has always been the leader for income raised and the number of survivors who participate,” said Jo-Ann Crank, the ACS Northeast Ohio Regional vice president.

Additionally, many of the volunteers who organize one of the local relays often serve on statewide committees and facilitate sessions for other volunteers and staff across the state.
