Success adds up for math students

Eight math students at Holy Family placed in the top three of their respective categories at the EOCTM Math Contest at Austintown Fitch High School April 24.

Nineteen students from Jean Wargo and Marilyn Hammerton’s classes competed in the event. The contest included more than 200 students in the Eastern Ohio Council for Teachers of Mathematics event. Any school whose teacher is a member can participate with their fourth, fifth and sixth-grade students.

The children compete in four rounds of problems in one of the following five categories: geometry, numbers and number relations, data analysis and probability, calculators and mental math.

The students have 12 minutes to complete each round. Students with the top three scores in each category within their grade level receive awards.

Fourth-grader Rebell Strollo was the top winner from Holy Family after taking first place in the mental math category. Classmate Christopher Masternick earned third in numbers and number relations.

Fifth-grader Kirsten Joss came in third in numbers and number relations, fifth-grader Alex Wollet took third in data analysis and probability and classmate Christopher Perry placed third in mental math.

For the sixth grade class, Matthew Holsinger earned second place in data analysis and probability, Jon Michael Koutsourais took third in calculator and Evan Leek placed second in mental math.
