School bus-car crash injures 12
YOUNGSTOWN — A collision between a car and a Howland school bus on the city’s South Side this morning sent 10 children on the bus and both drivers to local hospitals for treatment, but none of the injuries was reported to be serious.
The injured children, who were en route to Mill Creek Park’s Lanterman’s Mill on a field trip, were taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center and the Boardman campus of Akron Children’s Hospital.
The bus was westbound on Indianola Avenue and the car was northbound on Hillman Street, when the 10 a.m. collision forced the car under the bus, police said.
The bus driver was identified as 45-year-old Christine Harper, and the car driver was identified as 57-year-old Evelyn Jones.
The drivers gave conflicting versions of events, and there were no independent witnesses to the crash, police said.
It was unclear who had the right-of-way at the traffic light at the intersection where the accident occurred, police said.
