Prom-night patrols

Prom-night patrols

Township police will supplement regular patrols with high-visibility patrols this prom weekend.

According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, teens are more at risk during the prom season than any other time of year. Statistics show that traffic deaths among teens are highest during prom-season weekends.

As the department is encouraging students to celebrate and have fun without alcohol or drugs, officers will be targeting all violators for aggressive driving offenses, seat-belt usage and Operating a Vehicle while Impaired- related violations. That includes underage drinking.

Funding for the additional patrols is provided by the Mahoning County OVI Task Force and the Ohio Department of Public Safety’s Ohio Traffic Safety Office.

Dogs rescued

YOUNGSTOWN

Police cited a South Side woman for several housing- code violations after finding 28 dogs in her home living in deplorable conditions. Dorita Walker, 55, of West Warren Avenue, was charged with having obnoxious odors in her home and not meeting the responsibilities of an occupant.

She is free on her own recognizance and due back in court next month.

City police and representatives of the Mahoning County dog warden’s office and Animal Charity went to the West Warren Avenue home at 1:20 p.m. Wednesday after receiving a complaint about the house.

According to reports, the home had water-damaged broken ceilings, dog cages filled with feces, missing drywall, several boarded-up windows and broken steps.

Officials said nine of the dogs had to be destroyed. Animal-welfare groups are working to find homes for the rest of the dogs.

Recycle yard signs

The plastic or paperboard signs and metal posts are recyclable, and the recycling division urges that they not be placed in the trash.
