Growling sea-lion pup pulled from under police car

SAN DIEGO

A sea-lion pup has been captured after hiding under a San Diego police car for four hours in the middle of a road.

Police Sgt. Jack Knish says officers got a call about 4 a.m. Wednesday that the pup was crossing a street in the Ocean Beach area.

Knish says an officer parked his car in the middle of the road and went to investigate. That’s when the sea lion came out from under another car and scuttled under the patrol car.

SeaWorld experts retrieved the growling pup about 8 a.m.

Rescuer Kevin Robinson grabbed it by the tail and put it in a net. Robinson says the pup, which is less than a year old, was dehydrated but uninjured. He says the pup weighs about 25 pounds — less than half what it should weigh.

Robinson says it will be released within two months.

Comedian wins: Judge tosses suit over mother-in-law jokes

LOS ANGELES

A stand-up comedian who was sued for making mother-in-law jokes has had the last laugh after a federal judge threw the case out of court.

Sunda Croonquist was sued for defamation by her mother-in-law, Ruth Zafrin, and two other in-laws who claimed she defamed them with untrue quips about their supposedly meddlesome and annoying ways.

In a 21-page opinion issued last week, U.S. District Judge Mary L. Cooper concluded that the examples cited — including one in which Croonquist said her sister-in-law’s voice sounded like a cat in heat — fell under the category of protected speech.

Zafrin and her attorney did not return calls for comment.
