JFK’s Fredericka is top seed in tennis

Michael Fredericka of Warren JFK was selected as the top seed for the Division II sectional tennis singles tournament next week.

Competition will begin May 12 at Boardman High School (singles) and Volney Rogers (doubles) courts, starting at 8:15 a.m. at Boardman and 8:30 at Volney Rogers. In the event of rain, singles matches will be played at Boardman Tennis Center and doubles at Avalon Inn Tennis Center.

The semifinals and finals will be contested on May 15, starting at 9 a.m., at the same sites, or at Boardman Tennis Center in case of rain.

Also selected as seeds for singles were Ben Brocker (Poland), Mitch Maroscher (United) and Luka Spahija (Cardinal Mooney).

Other singles players expected to contend are Matt Higham (Cardinal Mooney), Kenny Duncan (Poland) and Anuj Kwatra (Liberty).

Last year Frederick was sectional champion and Brocker was runner-up. Both players advanced to the state tournament. Spahija and Higham were also district qualifiers in 2009.

In doubles, Mark Pelini and Mike Notar of Cardinal Mooney were selected the top seed, followed by Matt McDivitt and Zach McDivitt of Lakeview, Mike DiVito and Zack Fortunato of Poland, and Taylor Fredrickson and Jay Linam of Salem.

Duncan and Pelini qualified for the district tournament last year in doubles.
