Traffic stopped by tanker truck fire on Pa.’s I-79
ZELIENOPLE, Pa. (AP) — Traffic is still stopped on Interstate 79 north of Pittsburgh where the charred remains of a tanker truck sit on the side of the highway.
State police say the truck’s trailer and its own gas tank caught fire while northbound shortly after 7 a.m. Tuesday near Zelienople, about 30 miles north of Pittsburgh.
Crews worked about an hour to put out the fire and to ensure that 4,000 gallons of gasoline being carried in the tanker didn’t catch fire.
There were no immediate reports of injuries, but the interstate’s northbound lanes remain closed. Traffic is being detoured onto Routes 68 and 19 so it can get around the ruins.
