1904: The United States takes over construction of the Panama Canal.

1946: A two-day riot at Alcatraz prison in San Francisco Bay ends, the violence having claimed five lives.

1960: Actress-comedian Lucille Ball divorces her husband, Desi Arnaz, after 20 years of marriage.

1970: Ohio National Guardsmen open fire during an anti-war protest at Kent State University, killing four students and wounding nine others.

1935: A federal judge in Grand Rapids, Mich., denies a request for an injunction by the U.S. Justice Department to bar the merger of Republic Steel Corp. and Corrigan, McKinley Steel Co., ruling that the merger wouldn’t constitute a monopoly.

Mildred Bothwell, a senior at Youngstown College, is crowned queen of the junior prom at Stambaugh Auditorium.
