YSU summer fest seeks artists

YOUNGSTOWN

Applications for artists for the 12th annual Summer Festival of the Arts, July 10-11 at Youngstown State University, are available.

Events will include an artists marketplace, international festival, children’s art tent and dozens of activities sponsored by cultural and arts organizations and YSU departments.

Applications for the juried fine-art show are available. If accepted, the booth fee is $100. More than 60 artists participated last year.

Individual music, dance and theater performers, as well as performing groups, are also encouraged to apply to perform.

“The Summer Festival of the Arts is about making the arts accessible to everyone,” said Lori A. Factor, festival coordinator. “Both the fine and performing arts are showcased at the event, and we are proud to welcome local artists as well as those who call the Valley ‘home’ for this weekend. We have become a destination-event for artists to promote and sell their artwork, and patrons have come to expect a great selection of art year after year.”

Applications for fine artists wishing to sell their artwork in the Artists’ Marketplace are available by calling Factor at (330) 941-2307, by e-mailing her at lafactor@ysu.edu or by downloading an application at www.ysu.edu/sfa. Performers should e-mail Factor as well.

A new addition to the SFA is a collaboration with Art Youngstown Inc. to produce and exhibit Three Letters Youngstown, a public art project. Artists will create banners incorporating the letters Y, S, and U on various banners. On the reverse side, they will depict Youngstown in their own concept using red, black and white paint.

The banners will be hung during the SFA with the opportunity for them to be auctioned at the conclusion of the festival. Art Youngstown will supply the canvas for the banners. Artists will supply their own outdoor latex enamel in the three required colors. All items must be painted on both sides. Artists must be 16 years or older, professional or amateur, and must pre-register. Materials can be picked up May 17 and 18 at YSU’s Bliss Hall from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Those wishing to register for the Three Letters Youngstown project should e-mail Factor, Robert Dubec atbdubec@sbcglobal.net or Judith Szabo at j_szabo@sbcglobal.net.
