St. Thomas sweeps Diocesan track and field meet

LOUISVILLE
St. Thomas Aquinas won both the boys and girls portion of the 2010 Diocesan track and field championships on Saturday.
Aquinas’ boys team scored 137 points to top Cardinal Mooney’s 81, Canton Central Catholic’s 71, Warren JFK’s 33 and Ursuline’s 25.
The Knights’ girls team tallied 140.5 points to overtake Central Catholic (95), Mooney (83.5), JFK (20) and Ursuline (12).
Aquinas’ boys swept the four relays, while Mooney’s Marcus McWilson won the 100 in 11.47.
800 winner Matt Dougherty (2:02.38) of Aquinas was also on the 4x800 and 4x400 relays, while teammate and 300H winner Mike McGervey (41.70) was on the 4x400 and 4x100 relays.
Mooney’s Nick Boniface won the 100H in 16.05, while Ursuline’s Manuel Esparra won the 1600 in 4:31.59.
In field events, Mooney’s Eric Vendemia won the discus (143-01) and shot put (48-9).
Among girls, Mooney won the 4x100 and 4x200 relays in 51:12 and 1:50.26, respectively.
The 4x100 team comprised Lindsey Parkins, Alicia Williams, Chyna Davis and Elena Andino-Esparra, while the 4x200 team included Parkins, Williams, Andino-Esparra and Sage Spotleson.
Andino-Esparra also won the 200 in 27.13 and the junior captured the long jump with a leap of 17-2, while Davis also won the 100H in 15.61.
Aquinas junior Julia Pusateri swept the 1600 (5:10.81) and the 800 (2:24.61).
Maggie Fye of Canton Central Catholic on the discus with a throw of 108-05 and shot put with 34-01.75. Ursuline’s Courtney Powell was second in both events: 106-05 in discus and 33-11.5 in shot put.
