Mother of Mahoning Valley student shot and killed at Kent State dies

CANFIELD

The mother of one of four students shot and killed by Ohio National Guard troops during an anti-war demonstration at Kent State University in 1970 has died.

Her death comes two days before the 40th annual commemoration of the shootings.

Sarah Scheuer Zoldan of Canfield, 86, died of congestive heart failure Sunday morning at Hospice House. She and her first husband, Martin Scheuer, who died in 1999, were the parents of Sandra Scheuer, a 20-year-old junior at Kent State who was fatally shot on May 4, 1970.

Nine others were wounded during the anti-Vietnam War protest.

Audrey Scheuer of Savannah, Ga., said her mother planned to attend Tuesday’s ceremony marking the anniversary. Audrey Scheuer said she will take her mother’s place to show appreciation to students who are keeping alive the memory of the victims.

A private graveside service will be this afternoon by Rabbi Joel Berman at Congregation Ohev Tzedek Cemetery. Mrs. Zoldan was a member of the temple, its sisterhood, Hadassah, ACLU, the Fred Childress Greater Mahoning Parkinson Support Group and a graduate of The Rayen School. She married Morris Zoldan on Jan. 8, 2002; he survives. The family has requested that contributions be made to Congregation Ohev Tzedek, 5245 Glenwood Ave., Boardman.

In stories published April 25, The Vindicator revisited the events in 1970 including anti-war demonstrations that led to the National Guard being on campus. The Scheurer family declined to be interviewed.
