MCMSA honors member as its Gem of the Year

Mahoning County Medical Society Alliance met for a dinner and business session April 23 at Alberini’s Restaurant in Boardman. During the meeting, Gloria Jean LaRocca Detesco was named 2010 Gem of the Year.

Detesco was born in Youngstown and graduated from Youngstown State University’s business school. She worked in sales administration for Kraft General Foods for 21 years and is currently in charge of financial affairs at First Medical Associates.

An active member of the alliance for 18 years, Detesco served as president of MCMSA in 2003. During her term, she created the Golden Gem Award. The first recipient of the award was her late mother-in-law, Virginia Detesco.

Gloria Detesco also is an active member of the Junior League of Youngstown, the Butler Institute of American Art, the Ohio State Medical Association Alliance, the executive committee of Youngstown Symphony Society, the Junior League’s Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Survivor’s Tea and the Christmas Gala at The Butler. She has been a volunteer with the Children’s Museum of the Valley, Hospice of the Valley, the Red and White Ball for the American Red Cross Society, Youngstown Symphony Guild, the Youngstown Symphony Ball and as an officer of the Tippecanoe Country Club Women’s Organization.

The honoree and her husband, Dr. Thomas N. Detesco, live in Poland.
