Salem hangs on for 6-5 win

Nick Lesky struck out Justin Stanovcak to end the game as the SalemHigh baseball team defeated Liberty, 6-5, on Friday,

The Leopards stranded three baserunners when the game ended.

Lesky (4-1) went the distance and had two hits and scored once for Salem (7-12, 3-3). Also for the Quakers, Jonathan Fortney had two RBIs and Mike Risbeck knocked on one run.

For Liberty (8-10, 2-5), Jared Wiesen went 3-for-4 and knocked in two runs, Joe Tamarkin went 2-for-3 and scored three times and Nate Fader accounted for three RBIs.

Howland 4, Niles 2

NILEs

Chris Maze struck out nine and limited Niles to six hits in a seven-inning effort for Howland, which trailed, 2-1, until a three-run rally in the top of the seventh.

For the winners, Kenny Pozega had two hits including a double.

For Niles, Mike Watson had two hits, including a double. Watson and Evan Bollinger also scored the Red Dragons’ runs.

Ursuline 9, Pymatuning Valley 8

STRUTHERS

Sean Coffey threw six innings of three-hit relief as the Irish rallied from a 7-0 deficit. Harry Finelli scored twice and drove in two runs while Dave Rossi doubled. Ryan Strollo drove in two runs to tie the game in the sixth inning then scored the game-winner on a wild pitch. Lakers pitcher Tim Cross struck out 11 batters.

Poland 9, Beaver Local 2

POLAND

Sean Gabriel (4-1) struck out nine and scattered four hits during his innings before Clay Cooper relieved in the seventh.

Gabriel had a double and two RBIs, while Phil Lipari had a triple and scored three times. Gabriel scored twice. Also for the Bulldogs, Dom DeFelice accounted for three runs and John Price knocked in two runs. One of DeFelice’s hits was a double

St. Thomas Aquinas 10, Mooney 7

STRUTHERS

Ed Reese homered and Taylor Callahan went 2-for-4 for Mooney. Dante Lewis and Mark Warchol each had a double for the Cardinals.

Springfield 12, Crestview 2

NEW MIDDLETOWN

Cody Pitzo and Nick Russell each had three hits for the Tigers (17-5, 10-2). Russell, Ronnie Bovo and Joey Ohlin each doubled in an 11-hit attack.

North Canton Hoover 10, Boardman 9

NORTH CANTON

Boardman led, 9-8, headed into the bottom of the seventh, when Austin Appleby’s solo home run and Brett Tulodzieski’s sacrifice fly which scored Neal Greenho with the one out ended the game in favor of the Vikings (8-9, 4-4 Federal).

Sophomore Dan Popio had a home run, Rob Boyd had two triples, senior Anthony O’Nesti had a triple and junior Mark Leone doubled for Boardman (6-12, 1-7 Federal). Leone had two RBIs and Popio and Boyd, a senior, each had one RBI.
