The day arrives

Today is the big day for which thousands of area residents have been waiting. It’s the night of the Sir Elton John concert at the Covelli Centre in downtown Youngstown. Expectations are that all the bars and restaurants in the downtown will be hoppin’ and boppin’ both before and after the show, which begins at 8 p.m.

Four more people will be attending tonight’s show, thanks to the Hope Foundation of the Mahoning Valley. Tony Spano reports Sandra Jones of Poland won two Elton John concert tickets and dinner at the MVR during Thursday night’s raffle. And Tereritz Hartz of Youngstown won the eBay auction for two more concert tickets and dinner at Antone’s.

Derby party

The public is invited to a Kentucky Derby party that begins today at 5 p.m. at the Youngstown Club, which is in the Commerce Building, 201 Commerce St. downtown.

The bash is the annual fundraiser for the party’s sponsor, the Junior League of Youngstown. At 6 p.m., guests will be able to watch the Kentucky Derby on big-screen televisions. Tickets are $30 for individuals and $50 or $100 for patrons. Proceeds will benefit the community work done by the league, which is celebrating 80 years of service.
