Police are looking for the man who robbed a South Side convenience store.

According to police, a man walked into the Red and White Supermarket at 2126 Market St. at 9:15 p.m. Monday wearing a green Army jacket and black pants. He had a scarf over his face and was armed with a small handgun.

The store clerk told police the man demanded money bags from behind the counter. When the clerk attempted to open the cash register, the man told him no and again demanded money bags from behind the counter.

The robber was given money bags containing an undetermined amount of checks and cash. He made the clerk lie on the floor then ran out of the store.

Cars broken into

City police are looking for the individuals responsible for a rash of car break-ins on the city’s South Side.

Police took six reports of cars being broken into on the South Side on Monday. Thieves rummaged through cars causing damage and taking items such as CDs, MP3 players, GPS systems, iPods, laptops, clothes, jewelry and loose change.

The thefts occurred on Pointview, Irma, Wakefield and East Florida avenues and Everett and Craiger streets.

Political forum set

The Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber’s Government Affairs Council and the League of Women Voters of Trumbull County will have a political forum at 11:30 a.m. April 15 at Ciminero’s Banquet Centre, 123 Main St., featuring candidates for the 65th District Ohio House seat being vacated at year’s end by Rep. Sandra Harwood of Niles.

Invited are Democrats Michael Boccia of Niles, Sean O’Brien of Brookfield, Edward Stredney of Niles and J.D. Williams of Liberty, and Republicans Geno Capone of Hubbard and Nicholas Hunt of Niles. Glenbeigh ACMC Health Care System, an affiliate of the Cleveland Clinic, is sponsoring the event.

Handwritten questions will be generated from the audience during the luncheon, and a bipartisan committee of the League of Women Voters will screen the questions.

Route 11 resurfacing

Work is to begin Monday on a state Route 11 resurfacing project.

Almost seven miles of Route 11 will be resurfaced from just north of state Route 154 in Lisbon to just north of state Route 164 near Leetonia. Beginning April 19, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction.

The Ohio Department of Transportation’s contractor for the $4 million project is the Shelly Company of Thornville, Ohio, and it’s slated for completion Aug. 31.
