GOP candidates withdraw from races

Two Republicans — one who was running for Congress and the other for a seat in the Ohio House — are no longer candidates.
Damian DeGenova of Poland withdrew Tuesday as a Republican candidate for the 17th Congressional District.
DeGenova withdrew after some paper ballots were printed and electronic voting machines were programmed. Because of that, DeGenova’s name will appear on some ballots.
But with the formal withdrawal, no votes for DeGenova will be counted, said Kelly Pallante, director of the Trumbull County Board of Elections.
Letters will be sent to those voting by mail and notices will be posted at polling places informing people that DeGenova is not a candidate and votes for him won’t count, Pallante said.
The 17th Congressional District includes portions of Trumbull, Mahoning, Portage and Summit counties.
With DeGenova out, two Republican candidates remain in the May 4 primary. They are M.E. “Bing” Henderson of Tallmadge and Jim Graham of Cortland.
The Democratic primary candidates are incumbent Tim Ryan of Niles, Dan Moadus of Girard and Robert Crow of Youngstown.
Also, Nicholas A. Hunt of Niles withdrew March 11 as a Republican candidate for the 65th Ohio House District. With Hunt out of the race, there is only one Republican — Geno Capone of Hubbard — seeking the position.
There are four Democrats running for the seat, which represents southeast Trumbull County.
They are Michael V. Boccia of Niles, Sean J. O’Brien of Brookfield, Edward D. Stredney of Niles, and John D. Williams of Liberty. Also, Libertarian Timothy J. McNeil of Mineral Ridge is seeking the position.
State Rep. Sandra Stabile Harwood, a Niles Democrat, cannot run for re-election this year because of the state’s term-limit law.
