Counting the presidential votes

Counting the presidential votes

I enjoyed your March 24 car- toon showing Obama signing the health-care bill as some former presidents gave a “thumbs up” for his action.

It would seem to be a good idea to poll the former presidents and see who would favor the new health-care bill and who would not. There have been 43 different presidents, (G. Cleveland gets only one vote even though he served twice). I came up with 15 presidents in favor of the bill (35 percent) and 28 opposed (65 percent). Not much support there.

And of the presidents who would oppose the bill were, George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. These were presidents who were true statesmen and whose judgment I would trust. Of those who favored that bill we have, Ram-it-thru LBJ, Tricky Dick Nixon, and Party-boy Clinton. I wouldn’t buy a used car from these men, much less trust them to decide national policy.

To assess the passage of this bill, let us assume we have an American household made up mostly of Democrats and Republicans. At the present time, no one in this household has a steady job, there is no savings account, no rainy day fund, there is unpaid credit card debt, and a sizable house payment. With all of this, the Democrats went out and bought a new Rolls-Royce on a maxed-out credit card. Nice going, Democrats
