Bullet holes in house

Bullet holes in house

YOUNGSTOWN

Police said they found two bullet holes in a home in the 900 block of Ridge Avenue after residents reported shots fired at their house. A resident told police that her son got into an argument with some girls who followed him home late Saturday.

Her son ordered one 17-year-old girl off the property and then shoved her, the woman said, adding that the girl threatened to return with her boyfriend and shoot up the house. About 12:30 a.m. Sunday, that same girl and a second person drove up to the house in a red car and fired several shots, the resident told police. No one was injured.

Court orders retrial

YOUNGSTOWN

The 7th District Court of Appeals has ordered a new trial for a man who was sentenced to 10 years in prison after a jury convicted him of raping his former girlfriend in June 2007. The appeals court ordered the new trial for Carl Chaney, 52, of Hubbard Road, an inmate at the Belmont Correctional Institution, saying the prosecution made improper references during its cross-examination of Chaney and its closing argument to Chaney’s refusal to give a statement to police after his arrest.

The appeals court noted that then-Judge Timothy E. Franken of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court failed to tell the jury to disregard the prosecutor’s comments.
