Stick it to the Director: Help the Teen Advisory Board for the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County raise funds for the library by purchasing strips of duct tape to be used to tape Library Director Carlton Sears to a wall at the Boardman Library. Grant-seeking basics: Learn how the grant center’s resources can help you become more effective. An introductory session geared to beginners, provides instruction in foundation research and identifying potential funders. Includes a tour of the center and an introduction to the Foundation Center’s Web site. Main, 6:30 p.m. April 20.
Grant Center: Introduction to the Foundation Directory Online. This hourlong session provides a hands-on introduction to the Foundation Center’s Web subscription database, The Foundation Directory Online Professional. In this program, you will learn how to create customized searches to develop targeted lists of foundations that will match your organization’s funding needs and search grants made by top funders. Lunch and Learn: “A Gettysburg Photo Mystery” with Timothy R. Brookes. Discovering a diary and several tintypes at a yard sale led East Liverpool attorney and Civil War historian Timothy R. Brookes to a previously unknown regional history, including the identification of certain Gettysburg battlefield photos. He’ll share the fascinating story of Jacob Shenkle, an East Liverpool native who saw extensive service with the Army of the Potomac and stayed on at Gettysburg to tend to the wounded. Spring Tea Fundraiser: Join us for an elegant and entertaining afternoon tea in the meeting room of Poland Library. Wear your favorite hat, gloves and bring your favorite tea cup. Special presentation by author Erin McGraw, “The Seamstress of Hollywood Boulevard.” Enjoy music, tea and tea foods. Using Newspapers in Genealogy Research: Newspapers are popping up everywhere online. Learn the basics of some major digitization projects for both small-town and big-city papers, and how to find some interesting genealogical information. Includes both free Web and library databases sources such as World Vital Records, Footnote, and Oplin. Main, 2-4 p.m. April 24.

Free tax preparation: The library will again provide locations for free tax preparation and electronic filing for seniors and those (at any age) with low to moderate income. The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly programs offer free tax help for taxpayers who qualify. VITA and TCE provide services for low- to middle-income taxpayers. (Please note that taxpayers with significant self-employment income, capital gains or complex transactions should seek the counsel of a professional tax preparer.) Lake Huron Shipwreck: Sole Survivor: Dennis Hale made Great Lakes history with the sinking of the iron ore freighter “Daniel J. Morrell” on November 29, 1966 on Lake Huron. Of the crew of 29, he was the only survivor. He will share the amazing and anguishing story of his incredible survival. Main, 6:30 p.m. April 22.
Behind the Badge: True Stories of Cops Who Kill: Stacy Dittrich is a 17-year law enforcement officer, media consultant, and former detective. She is also the author of the popular CeeCee Gallagher thriller series about a female detective. Her first true-crime book, “Murder Behind the Badge: True Stories of Cops Who Kill” has also received rave reviews. Main, 6:30 p.m. April 29.
