KSU to spring into action over break

Staff report

An “Alternative Spring Break” is coming to the Salem and East Liverpool branches of Kent State University in Columbiana County.

The program grew out of helping victims of Hurricane Katrina five years ago.

Starting today, 26 students plus KSU staff members will call the Salem Campus home for a week.

During the day, they will form work teams and assist area organizations. At night, Kent State faculty members will present an array of programs, including learning more about health and environmental issues.

The largest projects include cleaning and repairing the Greenway Bike Trail and working with the Little Beaver Creek Land Foundation that is reforesting mined land.

Other projects through the East Liverpool Salvation Army include cleaning gutters, preparing and painting the homes of shut-ins, single parents and the elderly.
