Aviation honor

Coast Guard Academy Cadet Matthew Delahunty of Youngstown was among those honored in Washington, D.C., by “Aviation Week” at its 53rd annual Laureate Awards for outstanding achievements in aviation, aerospace and defense.

The awards also recognize the innovation, vision and exploration of current and future leaders, such as Delahunty.

Born and reared in Youngstown, Delahunty is specializing in computer and software domains in the electrical- and computer-engineering community at the academy. He worked as an intern at the National Security Agency, where he rewrote software to protect U.S. communication security.

For his senior design project, Delahunty is developing secure e-mail communications for the Coast Guard to use with nonmilitary port partners.

In addition to academics, he has coordinated weekly food donations between the Academy’s dining contractor and the local homeless shelter and has organized trips to New York City and Los Angeles to expose others to the problem of homelessness and encourage a response.
