All Star basketball games set this week

With state basketball tournaments completed, postseason all-star games take center stage.

Two are scheduled this week, beginning with the Al Beach Classic at Boardman High on Tuesday. That will be followed by the ninth annual Frank Bubba Memorial Classic on Wednesday at Warren Harding High.

Girls games begins at 6 p.m. with the boys to follow.

Both events will include 3-point and dunk contests.

The Beach Classic will feature standouts such as Ben Donlow and Niko Fatimus of Poland, which reached the Div. II regional semifinals.

Fatimus averaged 18 points per game, while Donlow averaged 16 points.

They’ll be joined on the Red All-Star squad by Casey Carroll, Youngstown Christian’s Div. IV first-team all-Ohioan who led the Eagles to a 19-1 record and an appearance in the district championship game against McDonald.

The Red squad will be coached by Ron Price of Mathews and Chris Fahndrich of Brookfield.

East High’s Mark Cherol and Struthers High’s Joe Savko will coach the White team.

The girls will also have Red and White rosters with the Reds featuring Struthers’ Dana Mathews, who popped in 20.2 points per game to lead the Wildcats’ successful season under John Grandy.

The Reds will be coached by Boardman’s Ron Moschella, who will have two of his own players in Doriyon Glass and Darryce Moore.

Among the slam-Dunk finalists are Campbell’s Doug Williams and Dwaylon Letlo, Brookfield’s Pablo Diaz and Elliot Taylor, East’s Justin Brown, Boardman’s Chase Hammond and Mathews’ Chris Morgan.

The Bubba Classic’s sides will be between Mahoning and Trumbull schools.

Campbell’s Mike Szenborn will coach the Mahoning team while LaBrae’s Lisa Aldridge will guide the Trumbull girls.

Boardman’s Glass also will also be a Bubba Classic player as will Mathews and Uceta.

Fitch’s Byanca Henderson and West Branch’s Michele Sosnick will also bring their talents.

Trumbull will feature Howland’s Jessica Wilson as well as three Harding players: Jasmine Kirkland, Aundrea Baldridge and Kourtney Williams.

East’s Mark Cherol will coach Mahoning boys while Ron Price will lead the Trumbull team.
