TOUGH LOVE: YSU coach Eric Wolford said he’s been impressed with the Penguins’ attitude in spring practice. “With new coaches and a new program ... a lot of times there’s mass exoduses of players wanting to leave unhappy. These kids are starting to genuinely understand that we care about them we’re going to be in your face coaching. At the same time we’re going to love you and care about you, but at the same time, we’re going to hold you accountable, too. We have high expectations for you.”

WEATHER WOES: Although it was sunny on Friday, YSU got hit with the first bad weather day of spring practice with sub-40 degree temperatures and a chilly wind. YSU sports information director Trevor Parks has been annointed as Wolford’s connection with the weather gods, so Parks was blamed Friday. “He didn’t do enough praying,” Wolford said. When told Parks should have done a warm weather dance to appease the gods, Wolford said he didn’t think Parks was a good dancer. “He reminds me of one of those stiff white guys,” he said. Is Wolford’s dancing better? “No, I’m not very good.” Incidentally, Wolford ended practice 30 minutes early.

SCRIMMAGE TIME: The Penguins will scrimmage today from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Stambaugh Stadium. Fans are welcome to attend. Wolford said he wants to see certain players establish themselves as impact players. He also wants to see better tackling — a weak spot, he said — while eliminating pre-snap penalties and missed assignments. “[It’s] the first time we get the coaches off the field and kind of take the training wheels off the bicycle and see if these boys can ride.”
