The students at Dobbins Elementary School celebrated both the art of silence and the art of storytelling during Young Author’s Day Mar. 12.
The annual celebration, designed to encourage creative writing, featured an assembly performance by a classically trained mime artist.
In between his silent performances, Robo the Mime talked about the importance of story structure and told students how he gets inspiration for his stories.
“The performance captivated the attention of our children,” said Cheryl Borovitcky, the school’s principal. “The whole day focused on creativity in our student writing, which is promoted in each of our classrooms.”
Students returned to their classrooms to compose their own stories, both individually and in groups.
Robo the Mime stopped by each classroom to answer questions and help with story ideas.
“He gave my students good ideas to help them be more descriptive in their writing,” said third-grade teacher Debbie Patsko.
The school ended the day with an assembly, where students and classes were recognized for their writing.
Robo the Mime then performed selected student stories.
“It was exciting to have the mime act out my story on stage,” said Carrigan Sundstrom, a fourth-grade student.
