Parents, get your food coloring ready: Lloyd Elementary kindergartners could be asking for green eggs and ham for breakfast this morning after Friday’s Dr. Seuss Day at the school.
Principal Tom Lenton said the program, in its second year at Lloyd, allows kindergarten students to spend an afternoon learning math and reading with a parent, grandparent or significant adult.
“They do some literacy activities, and we serve them green eggs and ham,” he said. “The kids love the fact that they’ll spend this special time with a significant person in their lives.”
Besides eating a helping of green eggs and ham, the famous meal from the Dr. Seuss book of the same name, the children and their family members participated in several Dr. Seuss-themed activities, including a reading from another Seuss classic, “The Cat in the Hat,” and coloring pictures of The Grinch.
Tyler Evans, 6, and his grandmother Nancy Evans of Austintown spent quality time at the math station, where they used a “Cat in the Hat” ruler to learn measurements.
“I’m glad to be able to be here with him today,” Evans said.
Tyler said he was excited to have his grandmother visit him at school.
“I like doing things with her,” he said.
Across the table sat Evan Sahli, 6, and his grandmother Kathryn Greiner of Alliance. Greiner said she didn’t think twice about making the long drive to spend the day with her grandson.
“It’s my grandson,” she said. “He invited me here, and of course I told him absolutely.”
Joanie White, kindergarten teacher, said the activity is a tradition teachers brought over from the former Davis Elementary.
White said kindergarten is taught differently now from when these students’ family members were growing up.
“It gets the adults in here to see what we do in kindergarten now,” she said. “It’s all hands on, and it’s a really fun time.”
