Boardman school board moves next year’s spring break

In an effort to provide better testing opportunities for students, the board of education voted to make changes to the 2010-11 school calendar.

The board on Monday decided to change spring recess from the week after Easter to the week before.

The board also shortened the length of the break from six days to five.

“That does a couple things,” said Frank Lazzeri, superintendent. “At the high-school level, it gives them a bit more time to prepare for [advance placement] testing.”

Without the change, students would have taken the AP test immediately after the recess.

It also gives the middle and elementary schools’ teachers an extra week to administer the Ohio Achievement Assessments tests.

Reducing the number of days of the break gives the district an additional make-up day at the end of the school year in case it’s needed because of inclement weather.

“The state is reducing the number of calamity days next year from five days to four days,” explained Lazerri.

“We’re going to have to have some sort of contingency plan for make-up days,” he said.

Also at the meeting, the board and the Boardman Township trustees teamed up to honor the high school state champion bowling team.

The board and the trustees presented the girls with certificates.

The trustees also brought a sign declaring them the state champions this year.

It will be posted in Boardman to honor the team.
