Boardman bands will jazz up your Tuesday night


The Boardman Performing Arts Center will host the 10th annual Boardman High School Jazz Fest Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The event features a variety of styles and performers and some very interesting guests.

The Boardman High School Jazz Ensemble III will start the event with “Ove Como Va,” “China Grove” and Second Line.” The group was recently formed due to the overwhelming interest in the Jazz program at the school.

Director of Bands, Thomas M. Ruggieri, has stayed after school on Mondays and Tuesdays to teach the group.

Jazz Ensemble II will take the stage with a unique blend of jazz and blues with vocals thrown in for their performances of “Sick and Tired,” Careless Whisper,” “Sombrero,” “True Blue” and “Spinning Wheel” featuring guest artist Jack Schantz on trumpet.

Schantz performs as a member of the Cleveland Pops Orchestra and Blossom Festival Band. He has performed as a featured jazz trumpet soloist with many bands.

The headliner for the concert is Jazz Ensemble I. They will continue the their tradition of high-energy and high-quality performances. Selections will include Big Bad VooDoo Daddy’s “Big Time Operator,” Tommy Dorsey’s “Corinne, Corinna,” Chuck Mangione’s “Bellavia,” Duke Ellington’s “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore” and Ray Charles’ “One Mint Julep.” Schantz will be prominently featured with Jazz I.

Tickets will be available at the door. The cost is $3 for adults and $2 for students. Senior citizens and children will be admitted free. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
