New Castle police investigating shooting death


NEW CASTLE, Pa. — A city man apparently shot himself as law enforcement officials attempted to serve him with a warrant.

City police responded Thursday night to a call of a shooting in 500 block of North Cedar Street. They found Heath J. Moffatt, 31, lying on a sidewalk with a gunshot wound to his head.

According to police, members of the U.S. Marshal's office were attempting to serve a warrant on Moffatt when he pulled out a handgun and shot himself. The warrant was issued by the Shenango Township Police Department. Police recovered the handgun.

The Lawrence County coroner will perform an autopsy today.
