20 rescued dogs still need homes

CHAMPION

The Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County has moved the last 20 dogs from its temporary shelter in Champion to a private boarding kennel at an undisclosed location.

The dogs were among 162 that were rescued from a state Route 87 Gustavus Township home last month. Horses, cats, chickens and ducks were also taken from the home because the animals were being kept in poor conditions, according to the sheriff’s department.

Barbara Busko, president of the animal welfare league, said the last 20 dogs are all pit bulls and will remain at the private kennel until homes for them can be found or until an animal rescue takes them.

Animal rescues from Ashtabula, Lake and Cuyahoga counties in Ohio and also from California, Texas and Virginia have given homes to some of the other dogs, Busko said.

The Animal Welfare League took the 162 dogs to the temporary shelter in Champion Feb. 12 and received custody of them at a hearing a short time later.

Anyone wishing to adopt one of the remaining dogs should call (330) 394-3512.
