Pittsburgh, Pa.

Senior Cheryl Cale struck out six and allowed just two earned runs in the opener and the YSU softball team banged out 10 hits in the nightcap but the Penguins dropped a doubleheader Wednesday to Pittsburgh, 5-1, 6-3.

Cale held the Panthers scoreless through five innings and held a 1-0 lead thanks to a run-scoring double by sophomore Kristen Philen in the top of the fifth.

However, in the bottom of the sixth, Cale gave up five runs, three of them unearned, on three hits, an error, a hit batter and a walk.

In the nightcap, the Penguins fell behind 6-0 after three innings.

Board can drop Fighting Sioux name

BISMARCK, N.D.

An attorney for North Dakota says the state higher education board can drop the University of North Dakota’s Fighting Sioux nickname before the deadline in a court settlement.

But an attorney for eight Spirit Lake Sioux tribal members told the state Supreme Court on Tuesday that the Board of Higher Education must allow more time for members to voice their opinions on the matter.

The board is trying to drop the nickname before a Nov. 30 deadline set as part of a settlement between UND and the NCAA, which considers it hostile to American Indians.
