State, retailers brace for Ohio appliances rebate

COLUMBUS (AP) — Ohio retailers are extending their hours and state officials have phone banks ready for an expected rush when an Ohio appliance rebate program kicks off Friday.

The state will offer rebates of up to $250 when Ohioans buy an energy-efficient refrigerator, washing machine, dishwasher, gas heater or electric heat pump water heater for their homes. Federal stimulus money will provide close to 90,000 rebates.

Consumers must start by making a reservation with the Ohio Department of Development, either online or by phone. Department spokeswoman Bethany Close says controls are in place so the Web site — www.ohioappliancerebate.com — doesn’t crash, and a call center will have about 100 phone lines available.

Some stores planned to be open after midnight on Friday.
