YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown City Health District is celebrating National Public Health Day on April 5 with free health screenings and tests from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its offices at Oakhill Renaissance Place, 345 Oak Hill Ave. Screenings include blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol, and tests include tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. People seeking blood-sugar and cholesterol screenings must fast for at least eight hours before the tests. Also, H1N1 flu vaccine will be available. National award

DALLAS, TEXAS

The Northeast Ohio Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure was named “Affiliate of the Year” from among the global breast-cancer organization’s 122 affiliates nationwide. The award was presented at Komen’s Annual Affiliate Leadership Conference in Dallas, Texas. Sophie Sureau is executive director of the Northeast Ohio affiliate, which expanded from 15 to 22 counties in 2009.

Pinwheel displays

In recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month in April, Akron Children’s Hospital’s Mahoning Valley Child Advocacy Center is having three separate displays of Pinwheels for Prevention in Columbiana, Trumbull and Mahoning counties.

The pinwheels displays are part of a monthlong campaign by Prevent Child Abuse Ohio to enhance community awareness about child abuse and neglect. Each pinwheel represents one report of child abuse or neglect in the county.

On Wednesday at 11 a.m., 602 pinwheels will be placed in front of the Columbiana County Courthouse in Lisbon; on April 8 at 1 p.m., 2,106 pinwheels will be placed at the Trumbull County Children’s Services Board on Reeves Road in Warren; and on April 22 at 10 a.m., 1,311 pinwheels will be placed at Akron Children’s Beeghly Campus outside of Building A. Women’s Conference

NEW CASTLE, Pa.

Topics for the 2010 Lawrence County Women’s Conference, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 17 at New Castle High School, involve health, fitness and image. The $10 program charge includes lunch and complimentary participation in services provided in the Pamper Room.

Workshop topics include: Zumba Fitness, New Castle Community YMCA; Breast Health, Dr. Terri-Ann Gizienski; Hormones, Vitamins & Bones (bone-density screening, $5), Lynette Talpas; Fitness Forever, Tammy Zubasic; Update Your Make-Up, Mary Turner; Projecting a Professional Image, Michelle Goodman Brown; Living with Less Stress, LeeAnn Wilson; Minding Your Community, Robin Kirkwood; Investment Options, Christy Verenski; Before You Buy a Home, Anita McKeever; Pamper Room, featuring massages, iridology and skin and color analysis. There also will be vendors.

Registration forms for the Lawrence County Women’s Conference may be obtained through the Lawrence County United Way, Lawrence County Tourist Promotion Agency or downloaded from the women’s conference Web site. The deadline is April 9.
