UPDATED: Man cited after accident cuts power in Boardman

BOARDMAN — An 88-year-old man was cited for failure to maintain reasonable control today after crashing his car into a transformer, causing a power outage in the township.

Boardman Sgt. John Allsopp said the incident began at about 6:30 a.m. Thursday after George J. Mank pulled into Taylor Kia of Boardman. Mank told police he became confused and disoriented after realizing he was at the dealership and not his original destination – a health spa across town.

Allsopp said a patrolman driving North on Market Street witnessed Mank pull out of the dealership, cross over Market Street and enter the driveway of Cambridge Square Apartments. Mank then crashed into a utility pole, causing a transformer to explode – and the power to go out – before stopping in a ditch.

“A very confused, disoriented Mr. Mank lost control of his car,” Allsopp said.

Power was restored within two hours of the accident, Allsopp said.

He said Mank was cited for failure to maintain reasonable control will undergo evaluation by a doctor and testing by the State Highway Patrol to determine whether he is mentally and physically capable of driving.
