Veteran catcher providing leadership to Indians

GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) — Mike Redmond enjoys teaching the Cleveland Indians’ young catchers.

The 38-year-old has worked with some of the best — all-stars Charles Johnson, Ivan Rodriguez and Joe Mauer — but says he’s more than just a tutor. A .289 hitter over 12 seasons, he’s eager to add some offense to Cleveland’s lineup.

The Indians have a lot of left-handers in the lineup, so Redmond’s .327 career average against lefty pitchers was a key reason why he was signed as a free agent this winter.

Redmond is sharing time with rookies Lou Marson, Wyatt Toregas and top prospect Carlos Santana. They watch his routine and follow his lead, which includes getting to the ballpark before other teammates.
