HELOISE: Use final wish to start a new trend
Dear Heloise: My father’s final wish was that a donation of canned goods be given in his memory to the poor. He wished to begin a new trend, hoping that in the future people would follow his lead and request that each person attending a wake of a loved one bring a can of food in that person’s memory. More than 200 pounds of canned goods and hundreds of dollars were brought to the funeral home in my father’s memory by his friends and family, and then were distributed to various food banks.

My condolences on the loss of your father. How lovely that your father thought of others.

Dear Heloise: Here are some great uses for plastic newspaper wrappers/bags. Leave several in your luggage to:
Place polished shoes in to keep shoe polish off of clothes;
Use to bring home muddy, dirty or grass-stained shoes;
Use to bring home a swimsuit or other clothes that are not completely dry;
Store smaller items to group them, like pill bottles;
Wrap around small containers that might leak, like shampoo bottles.
They also can be used to refreeze leftover cooler ice from parties — simply place the ice in a bag and freeze. When ready to be used again, it will break up easily in the bag. This reused ice should not be used in drinks.

Dear Heloise: I don’t know how often I’ve struggled with keeping ill-fitting candle tapers standing tall in a candlestick holder without having them tip over. I’ve tried melting a little wax from the candle into the holder. Then I had a great idea: my glue gun! A little hot glue in the bottom of the candlestick holder, stick the candle in and voil ° — no more tipsy candles!
