SCOUTS

Eagle honors

Jason Joseph Volovar, son of Stephen and Marla Volovar of Poland, received his Eagle Scout award last month at a court-of-honor ceremony at Poland United Methodist Church.

He is the 88th member of Boy Scout Troop 2 to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. His scoutmaster is Rod Emerson.

Volovar has been a Scout since 2003 and has earned 24 merit badges. He has had various leadership positions in the troop.

His Eagle Scout service project for The Purple Cat Foundation was completed in June 2009. The foundation is a subsidiary of Iron and String Life Enhancement, founded by Jim Sutman of Poland in 1998, which provides social outlets and daily-living skills for adults with mental and developmental disabilities.

In conjunction with maintenance director Tony Santangelo, Volovar’s responsibilities included research, design and construction of raised beds for the planting of vegetables. The main goal was to provide three accessible gardens for the members to grow their own produce so they could then sell the products at a vegetable stand provided on the property in Coitsville.

Volovar is a junior at Poland Seminary High School, where he is a member of the golf team and plays the piano for the jazz ensemble. He has been a pianist for eight years.

He attended Holy Family School during his elementary years and has played the piano for Mass at Holy Family Church. He also participates in the high school annual talent show and Ohio Music Education Association competitions.
