The Irish Ancient Order of Hibernians and Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians honored Patrick Chrystal and Carol McGuinness as their man and woman of the year at noon Wednesday during a St. Patrick Day luncheon at St. Patrick Church.

Chrystal, an active member of the AOH, attended six of the last eight national and state conventions and has traveled to Washington for congressional hearings on the U.S./Britain Extradition Treaty.

He assisted in providing an opening meal when St. Bridget’s opened their hall. He served as chairman of the party following the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, and has supported the other Irish organizations in Mahoning County as a committee member, a participant or a financial contributor.

One of nine children born to Bob and Ann Chrystal (both now deceased), he married Sandra McGarry in 1973.

They are the parents of Shawn (Mark) Griffith and the late Patrick Chrystal. He is the co-owner of Timekap Inc. in Youngstown.

McGuinness, a daughter of Thomas B. and Julia Cardarelli, was born and raised on the East Side. She married Jim McGuinness in 1971 and they have a son, Bernie who lives in Columbus. They are members of St. Christine Church.

She has been a member of Mahoning County Golden Rose Division of the LAOH for many years, has served on the May crowning committee and the Feast Day of St. Brigid committee, and has been involved in various fund-raising activities. She has also been a member of the East Side Advisory Board of the Salvation Army.

McGuinness worked for Youngstown Sheet and Tube Co., then in the biology department and department of environmental and occupational health and safety at Youngstown State University until retiring in 2007. While at YSU, she obtained a state license in property and casualty insurance and became a notary public, and earned certificates in worker’s compensation, insurance law and many health and safety programs. She served on the inter-university council underwriting committee and was an alternate delegate to the Board of Governor’s Committee for the IUC Casualty Insurance Program. She also served as a member of the executive committee, job audit committee and elections committee of the YSU-ACE Union.

In July 2008 she began working as an intermittent employee in the parking service department at YSU, and works part-time at the Yankee Candle Shop in Southern Park Mall.
