Watson families investigate math

First-grade students at Watson Elementary School hosted their parents and grandparents for an afternoon of math games Mar. 11.

The first-grade parents invited the families to join their children in class for a series of interactive math activities. Kids and adults cooperated on different tasks using buttons, blocks, rulers and dice.

The first-grade Family Math Day is part of the school’s effort to introduce parents to Math Investigations, a new math curriculum.

Math Investigations is an innovative, hands-on approach to teaching math, said Jim Carchedi, the principal at Watson. “The parents and grandparents truly enjoyed coming to school and visiting with their children and being part of learning activities,” Carchedi said.

Watson’s family math events kicked off with “Are You Smarter Than Your Third-Grader?” Feb. 26. Third-grade students competed against their parents to answer math questions in a mock game show.

The kindergarten hosted a Math Night With Dad Mar. 16. The second-grade teachers will have their math night activities Mar. 30.
