Submit info for Holy Week, Easter

The Vindicator’s Religion page will run a listing of area services that are open to the public in observance of Palm Sunday, March 28; Maundy/Holy Thursday, April 1; Good Friday, April 2; Holy Saturday, April 3; and Easter and Orthodox Easter, April 4. The deadline to submit information is 5 p.m. Wednesday for publication March 27.

Information should include the denomination and name of the church, address, city or suburb, the day, time, type of service, your name and a phone number for verification.

Children’s choir

The African Children’s Choir will perform at 7 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, 256 Mahoning Ave., NW, Warren, and at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Calvary Bible Church, 2878 Warren-Meadville Road, Cortland.

Admission is free but a free-will offering will be collected to support the choir’s education, care and relief programs in Africa.

For the past 25 years, the African Children’s Choir has entertained millions at community concerts and special events around the world. Focusing on education, the choir currently cares for more than 7,000 children in Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, Rwanda, Sudan, Nigeria and Ghana. All of the choir children have come from extreme poverty.

Gospel choir

The Gospel choir of Antioch Baptist Church, 110 Funston St., will present “Seven Steps to the Cross” at 4 p.m. March 28.

Seven ministers will speak on assigned steps. Speakers are Michael Jordan of Union Baptist Church, Reginald Smith of Calvary Ministries International, Yvette Walker of Elizabeth Baptist Church, Kim Grant Logos of Baptist Assembly, Bernice Gordon of First Calvary Church, Kelvin Jordan of Second Baptist Church in Farrell, Pa., and Donald Campbell of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Sharon, Pa.

Walker singers

Bessemer, Pa.

First Covenant Church Choir will present the Tom Walker Family Singers at 7 p.m. today at Mohawk High School auditorium. Gene McConnell will be soloist and Robert Walker, pianist. The church choir will also sing.

Refreshments will follow in the school cafeteria.

An offering will be taken to benefit the church’s youth mission trip to Appalachia in June.

Discussion, dinner

How many possessions are too many? Do we have more than we really need? How much of what we possess could we give away without detracting from our well-being? How much should we give away?

These and other related questions will be the basis for a dinner and discussion Sunday at First Presbyterian Church of Girard, 890 Churchill Road.

The supper begins at 5 p.m. and the discussion follows.

The Rev. Gerald Bednar, professor of theology at St. Mary Seminary and Graduate School of Theology, Diocese of Cleveland, will be the featured speaker for the First Friday Club of Greater Youngstown on April 8 at Antone’s Banquet Centre on Market Street. His topic will be “Resurrection.”

Hesburgh lecture

The Rev. Ronald Nuzzi, a priest of the Diocese of Youngstown and senior director of the ACE Leadership Program at the University of Notre Dame, will be the featured speaker for the Hesburgh Lecture Series on Thursday.

The program is co-sponsored by Notre Dame Alumni Club of the Mahoning and Shenango Valleys and Catholic Charities, Diocese of Youngstown.

His topic will be “Gentleness Comes from the Strong: Toward a Spirituality for Leadership.”

The event will be at 6 p.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church parish hall, 343 Via Mount Carmel.

A buffet dinner precedes the lecture.

Cost is $15 with proceeds benefiting Catholic Charities’ Emergency Assistance programs.

The lecture has been approved for one general hour of religious education certification credit. Reservation deadline is Monday with Catholic Charities.

Coffeehouse concert

His Music Connection will sponsor a concert at 6 today at 29 W. Liberty St. Doors open at 5:30 with the His Music Connection band opening the show, followed by Emmaus of Howland then the Stevens Family of Warren.

The ministry offers free food and music.

Easter cantata

Calvary Baptist Church Adult Chancel Choir will present “Beyond the Cross,” an Easter cantata by Robert Sterling, during the 6 p.m. Palm Sunday service on March 28 at the church, 1463 Shields Road.

“Beyond the Cross” combines new music with old time favorites in an up-tempo style.

The musical centers on familiar hymns and worship songs and focuses on redemption, renewal and the Resurrection.

The Rev. Burl Jernigan will speak on “The Place, the People, and the Purpose” based on John 12:12-19.

James Ray, guest soloist, will present a special arrangement of the “The Holy City.”

Child care will be provided.

Dr. Daniel O. Aleshire, executive director of the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada, will be guest speaker at the David S. Schaff public lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave.

His topic will be “Shepherd, CEO, Entrepreneur and Social Worker: Pastoral Leadership and the Work of God’s People.”

Singing meditation

First Unitarian Universalist Church, 1105 Elm St., will present a singing meditation event from 4:30 to 6 p.m. March 28.

Featured will be Ruthie Rosauer and Liz Hill, co-authors of “Singing Meditation: Together in Sound and Silence.”

The interfaith spiritual practice includes songs drawn from Christian, Jewish, Buddhist and non-traditional sources.

Passion Play

Highway Tabernacle, 3000 S. Raccoon Road, will present its 10th annual Passion Play at 7 p.m. March 28 and April 2-4 and at 3 p.m. April 2.

The program is free; child care will be provided for infants through kindergarten.

Doors will open 45 minutes before each performance.
