Fitch track team excels in Geneva

The Austintown Fitch boys and girls track and field team competed in the American Scholastic Indoor National Championship in Geneva, Ohio, Mar. 12-13.

George Thomas, who has committed to throw for Youngstown State next year, won the weight throw with a toss of 71-1/4, which moved him to No. 1 in the state rankings in the event.

Te’John Lawrence placed second in the 60-meter dash in 7.13 and Andy Cercone placed fourth in 7.29. Jay Jakovina placed fourth in the high jump and fifth in the long jump. The boys 4x400 relay team of Lawrence, Cercone, Jakovina and Tarise Wolf placed fifth in 3:38.25.

For the girls, the 4x200 relay team of Theresa Scott, Jen Shiley, Kaity Shiley and Taylor Entzi placed third in 1:51.06. The girls 4x400 team of Entzi, Jen Shiley, Kaity Shiley and Alexis Cooper placed fourth in 4:13.94 and Jen Shiley placed fourth in the 400 in 60.15.

The Falcons will be well represented today at the OATCCC Indoor State Championships at Akron as several athletes have qualified in multiple events.

For the boys, Thomas qualified in the weight throw, Lawrence in the 60 meters and 200 meters and Jakovina in the high jump. For the girls, Tolich qualified in the weight throw and the discus with the state’s No. 1 marks in each event, MaKayla Martin in the high jump, Jen Shiley in the 400 and the 4x400 relay team of Entzi, Jen Shiley, Kaity Shiley and Cooper.
